1. This morning at the Baylands duck pond a first-summer BONAPARTE'S GULL
flew in and landed right next to the injured adult Bonaparte's that has
been there for some time. Pictures here:

This bird lacks the partial dark head shown by Sibley for first summer. In
their book on gulls, Olsen and Larsson say the plumage shown here is the
more common one.
2. Also at the duck pond this morning, this BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was
fetching nesting material -- probably for repair rather than first
construction at this date.

3. Yesterday at Arastradero I got this picture of an adult RED-TAILED HAWK
eating a large snake.

4. The other day on Charleston Slough, took this one of a FORSTER'S TERN in
second summer plumage, with the black cap and white forehead.
