All,
This morning Frank Vanslager and I first went to the Coyote Creek Field
Station Waterbird Pond. Birds seen included at least eight SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS,
a couple dozen WILSON'S PHALAROPES, a few Dowitchers (those ID'd were
LONG-BILLED), LEAST SANDPIPERS and WESTERN SANDPIPERS. Later we had good views of
a "young, not fuzzy" BARN OWL in the nest box at the Environmental Education
Center, Western and Least Sandpipers from the boardwalk on the northeastern
corner of New Chicago Marsh (near the center). No Semipalmated sandpipers but
we did find one WESA that has already molted into several gray mantle
feathers while still maintaining a nicely spotted white belly and flanks.
Stay cool,
Bob Reiling
