RE: [SBB] CCFS Waterbird Pond and New Chicago Marsh

Birders

Just to add to Bob's observations, I was at the waterbird pond yesterday.
The highlight there was an odd gull, which I think is a leucisitic (partial
albino) California Gull. What confused me was that it had yellow eyes and a
bright yellow bill with red gonys spot (no dark subterminal mark), very dull
gray-pink legs. All of this suggests something other than California Gull,
but I think they can all be accounted for by lack of melanin. Structurally
it looked like a California Gull, the wings were white however and there
were only some spotty grey mantle feathers. It appeared to be an adult. I
have some photos and will have to study them when I get some time.
Apart from what Bob saw, there were two or three Short-billed
Dowitchers there, staying on their own away from the larger groups of
Long-bills. The Wilson's Phalaropes included a few juveniles as well as well
molted adults. A Long-billed Curlew flew over the banding station. At CCFS
itself there was a female Lazuli Bunting, three Black-headed Grosbeaks (I
don't recall if we have nesting records for the station or not), and fledged
Hooded Orioles about.
