After some kind guidance from Bill Bousman,
I've realized that it's unlikely that I saw an American Bittern, and
more likely that it was an immature
Green Heron.
That's the last time I forget my binoculars on a Lexington Reservoir
trip!

I spent a few hours today kayaking on Lexington Reservoir.
Highlights were
Belted Kingfishers, gee about 4 or 6, at the west end.
American Bittern
Perhaps 5 green herons
Snowy Egrets
Black Crowned Night Heron
Greater Egret
Oh, and about three Common Meganser families, one with very young
chicks (ducklings?) and another with older youngsters.
Very cute.
Oh, and has anyone see a Mallard play dead?
Paddling near the shore. Two female or maybe immature ducks. One
scuttles off and flies, and I swear the other tucked it's head under
the weeds at shore and played dead!
By the time I realized how weird that was, it seemed too far to go
back and check.
Cheers,
Barbara
