Folks:
This morning, 7/7/2005, I cycled from the Alviso EEC out to the Alviso
Slough Trail and around the ponds. There is now lots of bay water moving
through the ponds, but not much shorebird habitat. The phalarope appear to
have moved off of A16 and I found only five WILSON'S PHALAROPE. Totals of
183 AM. WHITE PELICANS and 5 BROWN PELICANS is probably typical for early
July--more birds should be showing up later. All of the brownies were
immature. The DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT colony on the pond A9/A10 levee was
active with many adults standing around (I counted 360), but I saw only 11
incubating on nests, and less than a half dozen juveniles. The only real
surprise in an otherwise quiet ride was two female SURF SCOTERS on
A10. These are likely injured birds, as at Shoreline Lake.
