All,
Although birding was slow along Coyote Creek from Metcalf Rd south to the
back entrance road to the Coyote Creek Golf Course, Pat Kenny managed to re find
the AMERICAN REDSTART in a bush on the east side of the paved path 140 yds
downstream of the Sycamore Rest Stop (located just downstream of the Golf Course
access road). It was just another AMRE for Pat and Roland Kenner who had
seen the same bird a couple weeks earlier but it was a really nice year bird for
me. A few minutes earlier as we were having lunch at the Sycamore
Rest Stop a PRAIRIE FALCON flew in and perched for several minutes in the top of
one of the Sycamores a hundred yards away before deciding to fly back over our
heads heading downstream. We had also been fortunate earlier in being
able get good flying views of a couple AMERICAN BITTERN and of two pair of
WOOD DUCKS (numbers way down from previous years). A nicely marked
male HAIRY WOODPECKER well seen just south of Metcalf Road was
somewhat unexpected while DOWNY WOODPECKERS seemed more prevalent than usual
with at least nine seen.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
