Maybe (maybe!) very south bay.. or not. But we were coming back from
family in Orange County today, and made good enough time we stopped
for a break in the Pismo area and did a little exploring. In a little
park called Margo Dodd park, which is on the cliffline, we saw about
a dozen juvenile american white pelicans (a local told me the rock
many days is covered with them, it was a "bad day"), along with the
normal gulls and cormorants. On the rock near the pelicans was a
single juvenile pelagic cormorant sunning and very cooperative.
Laurie also thinks she saw a couple of auklets, but we didn't get the
binoculars on them.
(also three sea lions annoying the gulls whenever possible.... )
The only birding we did in OC was down at Tri-city park, where all
the usual suspects were there for this time of year: mandarins,
widgeons, double-crested cormorants, plus about 6 adult american
white pelicans. And in the "does the zoo know they're missing again?"
department, about ten egyptian geese hanging out and trying to look
inconspicuous....
One of these years, I'm going to stay down there long enough to get
some decent time in down in the forebay.... (sigh. but work calls....)

Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh
nervously and change the subject.
