Hi all,
And another Phalarope story....
Today around 2pm as I walked around the pond behind the Santa Clara Valley Water District buildings on Alamaden Expressway, I noticed a shorebird feeding in the water near the edge of the north side of the pond. I had about one second to look at it in my binoculars and realize that it was a phalarope before a male and female Peregrine swooped down from their perch in the large bare tree near where the bird was feeding. After about two passes each, the Peregrins gave up and the phalarope took shelter in the brush along the waters edge.
My look was too brief for me to confidently ID the bird as a Red or Red-necked Phalarope, but perhaps this was another of the many Red Phalaropes being seen in the area.
