South Bay Birders,
This morning (24 Dec), I birded the vicinity of lower Llagas Creek near the
Gilroy water treatment plant. The fields along Bloomfield Road and Frazier
Lake Road, between Llagas Creek and Highway 152, were loaded with birds.
Scanning from one spot produced more than 30 Red-tailed Hawks, 14
White-tailed Kites, 6 American Kestrels, 4 Northern Harriers, and 5
Loggerhead Shrikes simultaneously. Fields here had 80 Long-billed Curlews,
250 Least Sandpipers, 10 Greater Yellowlegs, 200+ American Pipits, and 135
Canada Geese. Flyovers included a Ross's Goose and Cackling Goose with 300
more Canada Geese, and 8 Tree Swallows.
Ponds along Llagas Creek near the water treatment plant held 460 Long-billed
Dowitchers, 70 Least Sandpipers, and 30 Dunlin along with numerous ducks. A
Merlin was also here.
Good birding,
Steve Rottenborn
