Rich Page and I covered the Berryessa area of the San Jose Urban Sector for
the San Jose CBC today, Dec 18. At mid-day Mike Azevedo joined us for
a while. The area we cover includes mostly urban/suburban parks, a golf
course, and the like; however, two riparian corridors also run through the area
- Coyote Creek and Penitencia Creek.
On this soggy count day we had a lower number of species than usual;
however, we had a few highlights worth mentioning.
The day started out with five HOODED MERGANSERS seen in a small pond at the
San Jose Municipal Golf Course - first time I've ever seen any here. A
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen along Coyote Creek on Schallenberger Road - an area
where we've seen we've seen this species before. Also we counted over 200
AMERICAN ROBINS along Coyote Creek near the golf course.
At the ponds at Overfelt Gardens we saw six WOOD DUCKS, a pair
of HOODED MERGANSERS, and two COMMON MERGANSERS. We also found a
first-winter WHITE-THROATED SPARROW associating with Golden-crowned Sparrows in
the brush by the ponds and also in a small live oak.
At Upper Penitencia Creek Park on Berryessa Road near Piedmont Road, we saw
the immature Aleutian-type CACKLING GOOSE with a flock of 90+ Canada
Geese. Presumably this is the same Cackling Goose seen Dec 16. Also
of interest was a flock of 50+ AMERICAN GOLDFINCH.
These were our highlights. My personal favorite sighting of the day
was of the Hoodies and Woodies together on the same pond at Overfelt
Gardens.
