Folks:
Today, 12/18/05, I joined Emily Allen in counting birds for the San Jose
CBC in a portion of the Alviso sector, which included the Arzino Ranch,
Coyote Creek below Hwy 237, and the sludge ponds for the San Jose-Santa
Clara WPCP. Our best birds were a WILSON'S WARBLER along Coyote Creek very
near the most upstream net lane and 72 TREE SWALLOWS on the sludge ponds
(apparently found widely today by many parties). Other good birds included
three MERLIN along Coyote Creek and at Arzino Ranch, a PEREGRINE FALCON
over the sludge ponds, 12 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER on the sludge ponds (found on
only 4 of the last 10 counts, but also seen in other locations today), and
100+ TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS at the Arzino Ranch, as expected.
Out of our sector, I briefly saw the SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER that was also
seen on multiple occasions today by other observers.
Along the bay, the weather was not so bad, with intermittent
light-to-moderate rain during the day. Up on Monument Ridge it looked much
worse.
