Hi all,
I located the reported SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER, this morning (12/8) off the
east side of the Aviso Marina in the area of the gull roost. It is with a
flock of LEAST SANDPIPERS and DUNLIN. The first thing that caught my
attention was the prominent (wide) buff edging on the tertials, then the
much larger size than the associated Least and Dunlins was most apparent.
The bird looked long when foraging. When it dipped it's head down in my
direction the rusty crown was very apparent. Not a Pectoral look. When
turned appropriately I could see the rufous wash on the breast although it
was not very bright, perhaps influenced by the cloud cover. Not a Pectoral
look. Other upperpart feathers were buff and perhaps rufous edged with
blackish centers making for a striking apperance. There also appeared to
be a light scapular line (brace). Other details were a white supercillium,
black eyeline, shortish or medium length black bill, yellow legs.
Apparently a juvenile. I didn't have a good enough view to detect the
presence or lack of any streaking in the vent/under tail area.
First seen at 10:15, the flocks are skiddish and I seemed to be able to
only get a few seconds view at a time. The flocks were still there when I
left at about 10:45 but by low tide at around 2:00 they may pull out.
