Hi all:
The Rusty Blackbird was on the wires on the north side
of the entrance road at 2:00 this afternoon. I like
that whole "drive, park, and find the bird you're
looking for instantly" program. Huge time-saver.
There was a Bill Bouseman sighting not too long after
that in the middle of the park. Neither of us found
the Burrowing Owls reported over the weekend, but the
blackbird flock relocated to our side of the hill, so
we were able to get another couple of looks at the
Rusty Blackbird. The flock was quite skittish while
we there, probably due to my holiday pants. Bill put
me onto an Aleutian Canada Goose, which I would likely
have missed w/out the advice.
A distant dark bird on a lower crossbar of one of the
electrical towers due east of the park --what was
certain to be a perched Cormorant-- morphed into an
Osprey once scoped. Which underscores the old adage:
"don't count your cormorants 'til they're scoped." A
female or juvenile Taiga-type Merlin was perched
opposite the pump station on the north side of the
park, and an adult male and a juvenile Northern
Harrier cruised the marsh in that area as well.
Good birding,
Bob Power
