[SBB] Continuing Stilt Sanfpiper and Willow Flycatchers

All,

Upon arrival at State and Spreckles in Alviso this morning the juvenile
STILT SANDPIPER was easily spotted as it fed Dowitcher-like but on an angle with
it's tail held high. This quick ID with Binos was followed with some concern
when the bird was viewed through the scope as it had bright yellow-orange
legs. Further investigation showed that the bird had dark centered rufous
edged tertials, a bit of rufous at the base of the bill and nice dark centered
scapulars (giving it a scaly look). A couple of the scapulars on each side
have already been replaced with light gray feathers. Neck and chest were
streaky and spotting was noted along the flanks and on the undertail coverts.
After some study one could make out a very slight decurve on the outer third of
the medium length bill. After a while, as the morning progressed, the legs
took on more of a bright yellow appearance. At noon the legs of the STSA
were still a brighter yellow than those of a GREATER YELLOWLEGS standing near
it. Later Pat Kenny and Roland Kenner got Frank Vanslager and I unto two
WILLOW FLYCATCHERS that were feeding on the north side of the Environmental
Education Center headquarters. One of the WIFLs was a first fall bird with fresh
looking plumage, a pale yellow belly and buffy wingbars while the other WIFL
had pale, worn looking plumage, a much brighter white belly and whitish
wingbars.

Take care,
Bob Reiling
