[SBB] Cedar Waxwings at SCVWD

On the way to the Santa Clara Valley Water District Headquarters this morning I passed a juvenile Great Blue Heron perched on top of a telephone pole. He must have been able to see the whole valley from his perch!!

It appeared quiet at the water district headquarters. I heard only a few Song Sparrows and Anna's Hummingbirds half way around the pond. Nothing from the dam either, just a Green Heron, Black-crowned Night-Heron and Black Phoebe's here. On the north side I found a pair of Wilson's Warblers which may be a new bird for me here. Then came across a male Common Yellowthroat was near the waters edge. Hadn't seen one here all summer. A noisy male Belted Kingfisher flew by a couple of times. Then I spotted the much larger female Belted Kingfisher perched on a pole with a couple of adult Nutmeg Mannikins in the grass behind her. Something caught my eye as I turned to leave. I decided to double back and found a Coopers Hawk perched in a large Sycamore tree. It made a dive for a Pied billed Grebe on the pond but missed. It was here that I recognized the buzz of CEDAR WAXWINGS and spotted four in a small tree north of the dam. More were flying back and forth when I found a perched juven!
ile with gray streaked belly. The waxwings were difficult to count flying to and from the Pepper trees, when suddenly they all flew off to the north together and I counted 11 in the small flock. Nearby a female W. Tanager was gorging herself on Elderberries, seemingly oblivious to me.

Am. Robins were giving loud alarm calls when I got to the west side of the pond. I again found the Coopers Hawk barely visible perched near the ground on the island. Watching the hawk, I found a pair of Yellow Warblers, one with belly streaks and a pale W. Tanager with white wing bars. Funny how one bird leads to finding another.
