All,
Having heard about Bill's Black Tern, I decided to check the tern roost
at the Sunnyvale Water Pollution Control Plant today 8/19/05 for unusual
terns. There were only about 30 FORSTER'S TERNS there, and nothing
unusual among them, but when I scoped up towards the northeast corner of
the west pond I spotted a hatching-year FRANKLIN'S GULL (mostly juvenile
but with some gray coverts and mantle feathers). This bird foraged the
entire time I watched it (20+ minutes) by flying into the wind and
picking at the water's surface, ocassionally stirring things up with its
feet. It was still there when I left just after 4:15pm and will likely
hang around that spot for a bit.
At least 7 BROWN PELICANS were in the area, most with 500+ AMERICAN
WHITE PELICANS in the northeast corner of the east pond. Also small
numbers (~30) of both PHALAROPE species, and a few TREE SWALLOWS with
the foraging swallows.
