[SBB] San Antonio Valley

Folks:

Today, 8/19/2005, John Furse and I made a loop from Livermore through the San Antonio Valley and over Mt. Hamilton. A few hundred yards before M.P. 9.88 on Mines Road we tried to raise some Rufous-crowned Sparrows, but instead flushed a GREATER ROADRUNNER from the California sage and set off the local Pyrannees (dogs). A vocal YELLOW WARBLER was along Arroyo Mocho in Santa Clara County, indicating that these warblers are starting to move south over a broad front. From the Colorado Creek crossing on Mines Road to the Digger Pine Ranch we found 2 male and 3 female LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCHES. A migrant OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was just north of Colorado Creek. The pond across from the Digger Pine Ranch had an adult and immature GREEN HERON, and four Green Herons were at the Stoddard Ranch pond in the valley, apparently two adults and two immatures. It seems that at least two pairs are breeding in the valley now, although we have no actual confirmations. Twenty BARN SWALLOWS and three CLIFF SWALLOWS near the Mallison Ranch in the valley are likely all local bird that have not yet started south. We also found a single lingering WESTERN KINGBIRD still in the valley. Just north of the stock pond near the dogleg on San Antonio Valley Road we had fairly extensive looks at a family of LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS, with what appeared to be one adult and three juveniles.
