[SBB] Semi. Sandpipers, Costa's Hummingbird

South Bay Birders,

This morning in New Chicago Marsh, 2 Semipalmated Sandpipers were on the north side of the railroad tracks in the northwest corner of the marsh (well west of the EEC entrance road). One was a very short-billed adult in mostly basic plumage (but retaining some basic scapulars), the other was a slightly longer-billed juvenile, different from the one I saw there last weekend. Other shorebirds in the marsh included:

105 American Avocets
430 Black-necked Stilts
12 Greater Yellowlegs
6 Lesser Yellowlegs
425 Western Sandpipers
275 Least Sandpipers
65 Long-billed Dowitchers
90 Wilson's Phalaropes
1,250 Red-necked Phalaropes

The female Costa's Hummingbird at our feeders, first noted 5 August, is still present, along with at least 3 Selasphorus sp. and 15 or more Anna's.

Good birding,

Steve Rottenborn
