At the Environmental Education Center this morning, a BARN OWL was
nicely visible in the box (in the trees along Mallard Slough).. There was
a YELLOW WARBLER in willows along Mallard Slough. A check of pond A16 and
the New Chicago Marsh from the levee separating them did not turn up much
shorebird variety. Nice looks at nearly all of about 60 WESTERN SANDPIPERs,
did not turn up a more eastern relative. I also saw 8 to 11 Red-NECKED
PHALAROPEs. The highlight of the walk was a large BLACK SKIMMER chick
on the fourth island in A16; it was already larger than the Forster's Terns,
with its massive bill developing. (I didn't see any adults.)
Also nothing unusual at the CCFS pond -- about 550 WILSON'S PHALAROPEs,
but the only YELLOWLEGS were 4 GREATER. Mike Mammoser was there, and will
no doubt give a fuller report.
