We have 3 baby Cal Towhees in our inner court garden, which is about
10' x 15' with walls 10 - 15 feet high to the sky. The nest is in a
Japanese Maple. The nest was built while we were on a birding trip
(Alaska). The parents have been very attentive and very protective,
but they are finally getting used to us. Well, we live there too.
They fledged about a week ago, and hid under an azalea plant. Now at
least one can fly up to a ledge about 4 feet from the ground; soon at
least one will probably make it up on the roof. Then the parents
will have their hands full guarding everyone.
We also have teen aged Scrub Jays that are bullying everyone, except
Daddy Quails.
We have at least 4 families of quail, since the babies in the
different groups range from golf ball size on up to teen agers.
We feed Lesser Goldfinches 12 months of the year (thistle seed); not
an insignificant expense. Anyway, I bought a sunflower plant
yesterday that is blooming, and is only about 20 inches high. Very
beautiful. Well, it was beautiful when I bought it, but the LEGOs
are chowing down on the leaves. It is beginning to look like a
cloud of locusts has descended on it.
At six this morning our Thrasher called so say there was no food, so
I had to get up and feed him.
It is almost a full time job taking care of all these birds, but it is fun.
