[SBB] Yellow-breasted Chat (Llagas Creek)

Folks:

This morning, 4/29/2005, I walked up the levee along the west side of Llagas Creek above Bloomfield. As I neared the first pond, a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was singing vociferously west of the levee and south of the first pond. A second bird was singing east of Llagas Creek. I had only brief views of the first bird, who then became silent. I walked further up the levee to pond 5 (ponds 2 to 4 have some water). There were a couple of GREEN HERONS along the creek. A pair of RING-NECKED DUCKS in pond 2 seemed late. There were lots of shorebirds including six SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and eight SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER along with the expected 122+ Long-billed Dowitcher and other shorebirds.

Walking back, I ran into Alan and Karen Thomas and then Chris Wolfe, all looking for the chats. I hung around for a while, but there was nary a sound. Maybe they had better luck after I left.

No warning ticket at the car--that's nice.
