All,
Over lunch today 4/28/05, I once again wandered the Moffett Community
Housing complex near my work, hoping to confirm breeding by some oak
woodland species. This time I was successful, finding nests with young
of both BEWICK'S WREN (in an old squirrel nest in a eucalyptus) and
NUTTALL'S WOODPECKER; these are both new breeding confirmations for
block 8040. The COOPER'S HAWK nest is still active, with the male
passing off a dead female HOUSE SPARROW to his mate. An ANNA'S
HUMMINGBIRD was still incubating and BUSHTITS were gathering nest
material, quite possibly for a second nesting.
I managed to find a couple of silent migrants: a WILSON'S WARBLER and an
ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER; the status of a single VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW
among a flock of CLIFF SWALLOWS was less obvious.
Most surprising, however, was a second-year BALD EAGLE (white belly,
molting innermost primaries) being harassed by a RED-TAILED HAWK (tiny
by comparison). The eagle circled up high and then headed off to the
east in a steady glide. Perhaps this is the same bird reported heading
south over Highway 92 and Skyline Blvd in San Mateo County on 20 April?
