All,
On the fairly flat section (first half mile) of Charcoal Rd this morning Pat
Kenny, Roland Kenner, Frank Vanslager and I several good views of two,
possibly three, HERMIT WARBLERS (males), several BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS,
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS, at least two YELLOW RUMPED
WARBLERS (both females), LAZULI BUNTINGS, BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS, PURPLE FINCH
(including a closely interacting pair), calling RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, CASSIN'S
VIREO, calling HUTTON'S VIREO, WARBLING VIREO, BAND-TAILED PIGEONS, and
CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES (as well as a few of the more common species). On our
way out we also spotted Peggy Don and her husband Bill trying to squeeze in a
few hours of birding into their day. We then went to Monte Bello OSP where we
heard a Flycatcher giving a nice "whit" call from the Sag Pond on Canyon
Trail; unfortunately we were unable to locate it in the willows (thinking Willow
Flycatcher). Just before Indian Creek Trail we had a nice view of a
Red-breasted Nuthatch. Later on Indian Creek Trail we added BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER
(a year bird for me) but we were unable to add any of the "goodies" seen
recently on it, the Old Ranch Trail or on the Bella Vista Trail. An ASH-THROATED
FLYCATCHER was on the hill above Canyon Trail near Page Mill Rd as we left
the park.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
