Hi,
In my previous post about the grackle on Saturday, I forgot to mention that
we saw a male Avocet sheltering his babies under his breast feathers near
the viewing platform at Charleston Slough. He was sitting on his ankles (we
think of them as the bird's knees that bend backwards, but anatomically
speaking they're the equivalent of human ankles). We could see little baby
Avocet feet sticking out below his breast and when he flew off for a few
minutes, we counted four babies. They look like fuzzy brown and beige golf
balls on sticks. Two of the babies were sweeping their beaks in the mud
just like mom and dad do. After the adult flew back, the babies returned to
their shelter. What a treat!
Good birding,
Nancy Teater
