[SBB] County birding for the Birdathon

Just a recap of our birdathon adventure yesterday for the SCVAS Birdathon.

My team, the "Persistent Picidae's" spent 12 hours circling the entire county as we started at the McClellan Ranch, worked our way south to Calero, east via Bailey, back up to Alviso, over to the baylands & back south to McClellan.

We birded in the rain throughout our morning and had only showers the rest of the day.

I commend the 14 brave volunteers who rose to the challenge and joined the team. Most of my team consider themselves beginning birders with the exception of some of our birding veterans like Harriet Gerson, Harold Fukuma and Patty Rouzer.

It was my goal to make sure everyone saw every species as we encountered each new bird. We did really well meeting that goal, except for the BLACK HEADED GROSBEAK and WESTERN TANAGER picked up at Picchetti.

One SAY'S PHOEBE near Calero was a nice surprise. Stopping for lunch along Bailey allowed for fantastic views of a low flying GOLDEN EAGLE.

As we drove into Don Edwards we all enjoyed a beautiful adult male PEREGRINE FALCON sitting on the power tower. We also had the opportunity to watch several BURROWING OWLS flying about as they hunted along the Arzino Ranch.

We missed the Common Loon and Great Tailed Grackle, but ended our day with 113 species. (We had an additional 4 heard only.)
