Hi, Matthew:
When I was there, no-one was parked in the broad, safe parking area
(which is now posted), but there were cars parked across the road in
makeshift parking spaces which were closer to the road itself. I've
asked a ranger about this. He says that there is a general rule against
parking on state highways, enforced by the Highway Patrol, etc. -- but
I've never seen it enforced along the Mt. Hamilton Road (has anyone?).
He had not been aware of the new no-parking signs (which don't look
at all to me like state signs), or why this particular spot (among the
many smaller pullouts along the road) would be posted. He said he
would take a look, so I may get some feedback.
I didn't ask about the creekside road -- I suspect that may be
private property, since this is right along the park boundary (it's
a bit hard to tell on the map, although a "Smith Creek Trail" is
labelled).
