For the past two days, I have noticed flocks of about
30 to 40 very small birds, quickly moving past, too
high and fast for me to identify. I felt this was
unusual for this time of year. Could they be Lesser
Goldfinch?
I last saw my Gold Crown Sparrows, nine of them in
breeding plumage, three days ago. The nest box given
to me by Janna Pauser has been occupied by
Chestnut-backed Chickadees. Lee Pauser took it down
and showed us the five young last Monday. I believe
they fledged yesterday. There was a lot of activity
in the back yard. A Scrub Jay was attempting to catch
one of the small birds. The Chickadees were still
going in and out of the nest box most of the day.
A Cooper's Hawk landed on the fence outside my kitchen
on Friday. It may be that a large Pine tree which was
cut down a few doors north of us had been used by the
hawk as a lookout or nest. Our large Pine Tree may
become it's hangout now.
