[SBB] Hermit and Nashville Warbers (Smiths Creek)

Folks:

This morning, 4/22/2005, I made a tour of Smiths Creek, walking up behind the CDF station to the saddle to the west, then walking south to the first height of land, then back and to the north to Twin Gates. I came back by the road and then took a walk upstream and back.

I found few migrants and those I did find were mostly silent. South of the saddle I had one small group of silent warblers including a single NASHVILLE WARBLER along with ORANGE-CROWNED, AUDUBON'S and MYRTLE WARBLERS. North of the saddle I found a larger flock, when I heard CASSIN'S VIREO singing. Besides the Cassin's, there were single male BLACK-THROATED GRAY and HERMIT WARBLERS, a couple of LAZULI BUNTINGS, and two TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS (singing). Only Orange-crowned Warblers were found in any numbers.

I had only one Empidonax, a PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER along Smiths Creek.

Clear nights may not be best for a good fallout of migrants, although they can lead to amazingly beautiful days as was today. Perhaps the rain that's coming in now will provide gifts for birders on the morrow.
