We did the Stile Ranch/Fortini trail loop at Santa Teresa Park again this
morning. Three Bullocks Orioles were seen from the parking lot. A male
Allen's Hummingbird was perched on a Toyon a short way up the trail.
Several singing Rufous-crowned Sparrows seen here and seven more seen at
other locations along the 2.8 mile hike. Just over the first ridge I
spotted my first Rock Wren perched on a rock from quite a distance. Three
W. Kingbirds flew by here. A pair of W. Bluebirds were near a nest box,
and Violet Green Swallows at another box. Over the second ridge I found a
second Rock Wren with very distinctive white supercillium and dark eye
line. I watched him as he bobbed on the orange lichen covered rock on the
ridge. Approaching the back of IBM Research facility I had a third very
pale Rock Wren on a rock right in front of me. It was singing with a stick
in its beak. I know it sounds impossible. It finally flew off when I
got within 8'. A singing Black-headed Grosbeak was heard in the grove of
tree's here. Later, my husband Lee, who was photographing wildflowers,
mentioned a possible Lazuli Bunting perched on the fence near these trees.
I heard Wilson's Warblers in two separate Valley Oaks near the creek. Four
Ash throated Flycatchers were heard or found along the trail on the second
half of the hike. A Cal. Thrasher, Huttons Vireo and another Black headed
Grosbeak were heard only along the creek. A second pair of W. Bluebirds
were near a ranch house and Red-tailed Hawks nesting in a Redwood tree
here. A Coopers Hawk, 2 Am. Kestrels, Violet Green Swallows, Barn and Rough
winged Swallows all seen flying over open fields of golden grass. A pair of
noisy W. Kingbirds were on a telephone pole near a ranch house and another
pair at San Vicente chasing after an Am. Kestrel. All along the trail we
found many wildflowers, one of them quite rare.
