I know it's a bit early, but if the male Western Tanager is truly
"unmistakable," then I saw one today, Wednesday, April 20, 2005, in
the Villa Maria area of Stevens Creek Park. I saw a bright yellow
bird high in the trees that edge the orchard. It's red head shone in
the sunlight. Right shape for my books, but this is my first
sighting so who knows? Maybe someone else would like a look?
Also saw Ash-throated Flycatcher brightly lit for a long morning sun
bath while singing. The other Flycatchers who preferred to hide
while singing were Olive-sided, Western Wood-Peewee, Pacific-slope.
There were other I'm sure, but birding by ear is not easy for me!
Good Birding!
Gordon
