[SBB] HV, Los Trancos OSP 4/15/2005

A lunchtime hike at Hidden Villa today produced (in addition to the usual seasonal suspects): a pair of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers building a nest at the junction of the Grapevine and Hostel Trails, an adult Golden Eagle cruising by on a south-to-north axis at 12:45, and a Sharp-shinned Hawk, also northbound over the ridge.

Dark-eyed Junco fledglings first appeared on the farm on 4/4; their begging calls can now be heard at locations all around HV. Rough-skinned Newts are hatching from small ponds around the property: their larvae, about 1/2 inch long, are whitish and still have yolk sacs along their bellies. I saw my FOS Chalcedon [aka Variable] Checkerspot butterfly today, also my FOS Green Hairstreak. There are several others in flight right now as well, in addition to the ubiquitous Painted Ladies which now seem to be staying put.

At Los Trancos OSP this morning before work I hustled around the Lost Creek Loop Trail, encountering 4+ Black-throated Gray Warblers, two Black-headed Grosbeaks,
and one each of all three local vireos. All of the above were singing birds (and all except Cassin's Vireo are present at HV as well). A Ruby-crowned Kinglet was still hanging around too.
