[SBB] Smith's Creek on Friday

This morning I spent some time at Smith's Creek, eventually making the circuit to Livermore. It wasn't as cold as I expected...read overdressed. My walk up the hill past the barn was delayed by a herd of wild pigs crossing the trail just past the green gate. My first sign of them was a mighty bellow from one of the boars, and what little hair I have raised my cap right off my head!

It was pretty quiet heading up until I got to where the trail flattens out, and then I finally encountered hermit warblers (2) and a black-throated gray warbler. Other singing birds soon appeared, like Cassin's vireos, western bluebirds, a lark sparrow, and several yellow-rumped warblers, mostly Myrtles, and a couple of Wilson's. Strangely, there were no orioles near the fire station.

The gate across the trail down to the creek that Roland pointed out is going to make Hammond's flycatcher harder to find this year. There is no No Trespassing sign, but it would be redundant...the gate is secure.

I only found one Lewis's woodpecker just before the junction store, and I had to walk the road and hear it calling to locate it. No Lawrence's goldfinches at the fire station. Sage sparrows were singing at the cattle guard.

Overall it was a beautiful, peaceful day, 52-species day, with just a few kamakaze bikers (but look out tomorrow!)
