[SBB] OATI confirmed in 8040

All,

Over lunch today 4/15/05, I wandered around the Moffett Community Housing complex, hoping to confirm breeding by some oak woodland species. This time I succeeded in confirming OAK TITMOUSE by finding a nest with young in an old woodpecker hole (adult carrying grub into hole and fecal sac out). This is the first breeding confirmation of this species in block 8040 and one of very few so close to the bay. A pair of NUTTALL'S WOODPECKERS and a singing BEWICK'S WREN were still around, but I had no luck confirming breeding for them. In addition to 2 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS and a CLIFF SWALLOW, a TREE SWALLOW was foraging over Stevens Creek. Although possibly a migrant at this time of year, this species has also started breeding more frequently near the bay edge recently. A male WESTERN BLUEBIRD was opposite NASA's Gate 18.

The ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD nest found on 4/4/05 is now completed and the female is incubating; another occupied nest was less than 30 yards away. A pair of adult COOPER'S HAWKS is once again breeding in the area. The (small!) male with very extended crissal feathers came in with a bloody prize and when the female came over, he took off in his best bat-like courtship flight, then returned to the nest, then left again to copulate with the female.

Still lots of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS (all seen being AUDUBON'S today) and 2 GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS hanging around and two vocal HOODED ORIOLES about.

Mike Rogers
