At Stevens Creek Park this morning, I mainly spent time in the area
of the Cooley and Canyon picnic areas. I had a nice look at a singing
male BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER at the Canyon area, and also saw a
singing WILSON'S WARBLER near Cooley. The vireos in this area apparently
felt they should be heard but not seen, but I did hear all three species
singing, including one "Solitary" type, presumably CASSIN'S. Other birds
included BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER.
A briefer stop near the ranger station added PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER
(several heard), and another BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK. WARBLING VIREO seems
to be in good numbers this year, with quite a few singing males heard.
In Alviso I mainly checked the Arzino Ranch, finding a LESSER YELLOWLEGS
in the flooded area near El Estero. I only saw a total of two or three
GREATER. There are about 40 to 50 DOWITCHERs (LONG-BILLED calls heard)
using the fields too. When I pulled up behind the Jubilee Church, it
sounded like I had flushed a Snipe, but I didn't see it. Over at salt
pond A16, a quick check from the near end revealed close to 300
EARED GREBEs (many in breeding plumage), and three BONAPARTE'S GULLs.
