All,
This morning Frank Vanslager and I had 16 to 18 RED CROSSBILLS in the trees
at the top of Charcoal Rd (earlier we had a smaller group of RECR a couple
hundred yards west of Charcoal Rd). On Charcoal Rd we had a couple singing
male BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, a silent WARBLING
VIREO and singing CASSIN'S and HUTTON'S VIREOS. Later, on the Grizzly Flat
trail we had several singing BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS (a well seen male was a
first of the year for me); a singing WILSON'S WARBLER, a pair of PURPLE FINCHES,
more Orange-crowned Warblers and more Red Crossbills (no count). This time
the RECR were in, or very near, a good sized flock of Pygmy Nuthatch sounding
PINE SISKINS (we were hoping for Pygmy Nuthatch but a couple "zhreeeee's"
from the group dashed our hopes). A PILEATED WOODPECKER was heard several
times calling and drumming from across the valley to the east (toward Table
Mountain). A quick stop at Monte Bello OSP resulted in our third Black-throated
Gray Warbler (the best singer), more male Orange-crowned Warblers but little
else of note.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
