I went to Grant Ranch this morning before heading to work. I stopped at
Twin Gates first where I had a singing LARK SPARROW along with at least four
BULLOCK'S ORIOLES, a pair of WESTERN BLUEBIRDS, a pair of WHITE-BREASTED
NUTHATCHES, and a breeding plumaged YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER. A second stop
later in the day at the same place yielded a pair of LARK SPARROWS. [Nice
time to be out walking. Wildflowers are covering the hillsides.]
I stopped next at the fire station. Going through the gate by the station,
a COOPER'S HAWK exited stage right, pursued by AMERICAN CROWS. At the pond
up the hill behind the station, a HAIRY WOODPECKER briefly made an
appearance along with a couple very quiet CEDAR WAXWINGS. Back at the
station, I was lucky enough to see a DOWNY WOODPECKER fly in and a pair of
HOUSE WRENS were noisily interacting.
I made a final stop at the main parking lot. Another COOPER'S HAWK startled
out of a tree. This one had very pronounced nuptial patches. More
BULLOCK'S ORIOLES were joined by several WESTERN KINGBIRDS. A
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK called overhead.
