I was scouting this afternoon at the Picchetti Winery (Open Space). We witnessed great numbers of Painted Ladies all of which appeared to be flying west.

A Black-headed Grosbeak sang at Hidden Villa this AM 4/1/2005, the first I've heard about since Les Chibana had a chipping bird on Skyline back on 3/11. The Painted Lady migration is still very much in progress at HV this afternoon, the third day running that I've seen them in significant numbers. On Weds. 3/30 I was in Saratoga at lunchtime and witnessed a wave of them that must have been at least 100 a minute passing northward across Oak St.
Ron Thorn, a frequent contributor to the San Mateo county list, says he has seen vast numbers of these butterflies resting on the ground at Coyote Pt. in the early AMs lately. I'm glad to know they're resting sometime, they sure seem determined as they pass through here!
