I was out at Shoreline in the good evening light between 5 and 6, and there
were still at least two EARED GREBES in breeding plumage to be seen -- when
I was there they were skirting the edge of the lake from the west end
around the south shore. These guys stay under water a long time, and that
makes them easy to miss. (And don't give up on Horned Grebes yet -- they
are still being reported at Lake Merritt in Oakland.)

Combination of the good light and recent molt to breeding plumage gave this
Willet a nice appearance, I thought.

One of the many benefits of Shoreline Lake for bird photography is the
chance to get closer to Surf Scoters than is usually possible in their
regular habitat.

The setting sun reddens the green breast of an Anna's.

Hey, even a Starling looks good in this light -- actually, they are good
looking birds generally, though they suffer from xenophobic prejudices.
