SBBers,
With the weather changing yesterday, the numbers and
diversity of birds this past week has increased. I
just had our first ever Willow Flycatcher this
afternoon in our backyard. (New backyard bird!)
Yesterday afternoon, Janet saw two Western Bluebirds
in our front-yard. They seemed to be coming to find
insects or whatever in the lawn. Today we had five in
our yard and our neighbors yard. Previously, we had
only seen one. White-crowned Sparrows had arrived
earlier in the week, but the number jumped today to 6.
The number of House Sparrows and House Finch have
increased at the feeders. The numbers of Lesser and
American Goldfinch has been steady, as well as the
Western Scrub-Jays, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Anna's
Hummingbirds, California Towhees, and Mourning Dove,
but with all the ruckus going on around the feeders it
has attracted a returning Fox Sparrow and I think a
Lincoln's Sparrow. It was a quick glimpse and ducked
under some shrubs and I didn't get a good look. It
did seem smallish. I also feel that a Lincoln's
Sparrow would be more likely be on the move right now.
I very rarely see Song Sparrows in our yard, so a
question for any in the know, how much if any do Song
Sparrows move in the fall or are they pretty much all
local residents?
We also had our first Yellow-rumped Warbler yesterday.
A Bushtit troupe roams the neighborhood and passes
through the yard every couple of days.
A pair of Northern Mockingbirds come to eat blue
elderberries and a Black Phoebe comes to bathe and
seems to just like being around all the other birds,
but I haven't seen them today. About 15 Red-winged
Blackbirds lit on the utility wires, but didn't come
to eat, drink or bathe. Two American Crows are always
hanging out in the neighbor's redwood tree, but have
never come to a feeder.
Double-checking the location, yes, it was our
backyard.
Randy and Janet
Milpitas
