I had to be in Palo Alto today for an appointment and only had a
short time, so I wandered over to baylands to look for sparrows in
the fennel in the area between the rangers station and the
intepretive center. It was fairly birdy, but the birds weren't
feeling too cooperative this morning for myself or the other
photographers there (there were three of us shooting at the time). I
did end up with 3-4 song sparrows and a similar number of white-
crowned, one yellow warbler, one male common yellowthroat and one
probably female common yellowthroat. There were at least 2 dozen
other small (mostly sparrow-like) blobs either hanging out in the
deep shadows or flying away laughing...
I did hear two distinct calls that I know weren't any of the above,
one a sparrow-like call and one something else. One of the photos
mentioned a possible orange-crowned, the other a pacific flycatcher;
I saw neither (of course), and neither, at least when I left, had
cooperated enough for pictures...
