Al Jaramillo mentioned a couple of weeks ago that the fields
along the coastal bluffs on the south end of Half Moon Bay
were experiencing an explosion in the vole population,
providing an all-you-can-eat buffet for the raptors.
The feast is still in full swing. Harriers, Red-tail Hawks,
Red-shouldered Hawks and White-tailed Kites are all present
in good numbers. The voles become more active, and the feeding
accelerates, late in the day. Just before dark, the Barn Owls
appear.
The feeding and the viewing are not nearly as good when the
marine layer rolls in. The trick here is to watch the HMB
weather report and go out there 5-8 p.m. on a day when
conditions are likely to remain clear.
To get to the fields, continue south on Hwy 1 from the
intersection of Hwy 92 for about 3/4 mile. Turn west onto
Filbert or Poplar. Go to the end of the street and park.
