All,
This morning Carter Strain, Frank Vanslager and I had 3 - 4 STILT
SANDPIPERS near the first pond on the right as you head out northwest along the
RR tracks that run thru New Chicago Marsh from the EEC entrance road.
Later, shortly after a NORTHERN HARRIER flushed birds on the western
edge of the marsh, Frank found a RUFF in the pond south (left side) of
the RR tracks near the junction of the tracks with the main RR line
that runs into Alviso. This fairly small looking ruff (when compared to nearby
WILSON'S PHALAROPE) was uniformly quite dark in the throat and chest (no
barring or blotching), was light gray in the belly and under tail coverts and
the wings appeared scaly (but no visible color because of the distance,
150+ feet, and the bird was backlit). The legs and bill were dark,
the legs seemed to occasionally show some yellowish highlights. As such, I
feel that this Ruff is a juvenile Reeve. The Reeve was
still in the pond when we left. Earlier Pat Kenny, Frank and I did a
quick check of Sunnyvale Baylands which had lots of YELLOW WARBLERS and a couple
Flycatchers but nothing new, Still no Sparrows!
Take care,
Bob Reiling |
