Hi all: On Wednesday morning last (August 31st), I was
out at the Alviso EEC and took pictures of some unusual birds which turned out
to be the Stilt Sandpipers that Bob and Frank found later. Two of my
pictures show as many as three birds. The reason I was confused was that
they were in a pond with Lesser Yellowlegs (these pictures are not posted) of a
similar size (at least as they were wading knee high in the water feeding
mostly). They all had yellow legs but the beak drooped slightly with the
slight thinckening at the end and that made me curious. In retrospect, it
seems that they also fed slightly differently, stabbing quite deep, moreso than
the Yellowlegs nearby. It wasn’t until I got home and
processed the pictures that I realized that these were the Stilt Sandpipers and
that the ‘scales’ referred to in Sibley were apparent as well as
other telltale markings. I also got pictures of what I think is a Willow Flycatcher
which was foraging mid-bush near the EEC. Your comments are
welcome. I believe all the pictures are of the same bird, given timing,
but the lighting is quite different in the photos due to direction of the
shots. Happy Birding! Jean P.S. I saw a Cooper’s Hawk sitting on an
artichoke near the coast today! Photos are at http://community.webshots.com/user/birdermom Stilt Sandpiper pictures are in the folder titled “Shorebirds” Willow Flycatcher pictures are in the folder titled “Small
