Hi Birders-
I walked off lunch by going back up the tracks from
where they cross the EEC entrance road. In the last pond, where I saw the one
last night, there were three Stilt Sandpipers, the most I've seen at once
outside of Texas. Two tended to stay within the cluster of small islands,
but the third was farther along the tracks within two
feet of the shore. While looking at it a Snowy Plover landed next to
it. I inched my way closer. The plover flew off, but I got within twenty feet of
the Stilt, which appeared to be adult. It had dark spots on the undertail
coverts and one or two gray scapulars. Of the two others, one was probably the
juvenile I saw last night and one was too obscured to tell. No Baird's in the
channel along the road. At the EEC on the first island at the salt pond, I
believe one Black Skimmer chick survives. Between the two adults a small gray
blob moved once.
