[SBB] White-winged Scoter (closeup pic)

Title: White-winged Scoter (closeup pic)

Today 10/29/07 around 1:30PM, I found myself in Palo Alto on an errand and decided to stop by Shoreline Lake for the White-winged Scoters. I did not have

my scope or even my binocs, just the 300mm lens on my camera. So this was driven by pure optimism. Turns out the optimism was well founded today.

Intially I had some scoter specs in the distance and I clicked a few with the hopes of zooming up the pics later for an id. But a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER obliged, spreading its wing and showing its crisp white wing panel. I felt that was lucky enough and was ready to head back but then the scoter raft started to drift to the

north-eastern shore (the salt pond side). I crouched along the footpath and got close enough to take a few pics with the 300mm - closer than I can ever expect to be to a White-winged Scoter again for a while. Ah, the joys of serendipity and Shoreline Lake!

Pics are at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30419272@N00/
Includes some female SURF SCOTERs for comparison.
