Hello All,
At least 36 southbound Varied Thrushes passed over
me between 8 and 9 AM today, 10/15/2007, as I descended from Page Mill Rd. to
the little pond below Monte Bello Preserve's Gate 5. They were the first I'd
seen this fall.
Also present were 2 Lawrence's Goldfinches (not
present much lately), 2 Soras, a Wilson's Snipe which has been around for a few
weeks now, and a Townsend's Warbler.
As an out-of-area aside, I spent the weekend just
past at Tamarack Flat campground in Yosemite Park. It's getting chilly up there!
Some members of my group had a close encounter with a Great Gray Owl day-hunting
at 11AM on 10/13. I missed the bird myself, when I was able to check the
spot at the same time the following day, but who knows? It could still be
around. It was seen both flying and sitting on the ground in a large meadow
right across from the Yosemite Institute parking area, which is a couple of
miles up Tioga Road just after it branches off from Hwy 120. My own best bird up
there was a flock of 7 Evening Grosbeaks.
