On the way to Bald Mt. this morning we stopped at Almaden Reservoir.
Many woodpeckers were seen in the trees on the hill near the only
obvious residence. Three Red breasted Sapsuckers, 2 Nuttalls and many
Acorn Woodpeckers were chasing each other. Birds seen on the reservoir
included 2 Great Blue Herons, 2 Wilson's Snipe, 8 Common Mergansers, 6
Wood Ducks, and a Belted Kingfisher. A flock of 50 Band Tailed Pigeons
flew over.
Bald Mt. wasn't particularly birdy at 9:30 am, but many Fox Sparrows
popped up in the chaparral giving sharp chip calls. Two were singing a
loud song. Also seen were Wrentit, Cal. Thrasher, No. Flicker, a dozen
Tree Swallows, 4 Hermit Thrush, one Vaux's Swift and Am. Kestrel. A
total of 14 Fox Sp., all sooty, were seen along the trail or road. I
assume they will soon disperse.
