All,
This morning Frank Vanslager and I had a PECTORAL SANDPIPER in New Chicago
Marsh on the southern side of the Environmental Education Center entrance
Rd. Later as we left Pete LaTorrette pointed out a second PESA on the
northern side of the entrance. Pete felt that the second bird was a male
(and intuitively that the first was a female). While near the first
island in Salt Pond A16 Frank and I saw one of the juvenile BLACK SKIMMER fly
around the island and even attempt to skim the surface on the far (smooth
water) side of the island. Both BLSK parents were also on the island
and a second young BLSK was seen walking along the island some
distance from where the first had landed.(Frank briefly saw what he
thought may have been a third Juvenile where the first had settled in after its
flight around the island). They probably won't be around much
longer. Some HERRING GULLS were on the island but still no sign of
Thayer's Gulls. We then had a couple BURROWING OWLS and LONG-BILLED
CURLEWS in Arzino Ranch but nothing "notable" at Sunnyvale Baylands
park.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
