Hey, all. it's finally time for us to migrate this list over to Yahoo
groups. I've set November 11 (next sunday) as the day we'll disable
posting to this list and finish the migration.
Many of you have set up subscriptions on the new list. A number of you
haven't yet. If you don't do it in the next week, you'll be wondering
why everything go really, really quiet soon. Now's the time to get
your subscription set up if you haven't.
Please sign up at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/south-bay-birds/ or
go to http://www.siliconvalleybirders.org for more info. If you want
to subscribe to the list, but not set up a Yahoo ID to do so, there
are instructions on how to do so here: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/groups/original/members/manage/manage-06.html
-- if you don't have the yahoo account, though, some features, such
as archives and photos, will be unavailable.
A few folks have worried about spam problems at Yahoo -- they've had
their issues in the past (what mail system hasn't, though?), but these
days, things seem pretty solid. I've also set up the system so that
when someone subscribes, their posting access will be moderated. That
means there may be a delay in a message being published the first time
someone posts, but once I know you are a real person, I'll turn that
off and you'll be able to post normally. That'll protect the list from
the "subscribe and slam" spammers, and should prevent any problems.
Archives and other features are all limited to members only, and the
list subscriptions are private.
A few of you have emailed me asking for help -- I haven't forgotten
you, I'm just VERY backed up on email, because of starting a new job
and then catching a cold a day later (and then, like most of you,
taking advantage of this weather by spending as much time as possible
OUTSIDE -- I went to Los Consumnes yesterday to photograph the
sandhill cranes, and sunset was absolutely freaking awesome... but I
digress).
I will be working to catch up on the backlog tonight and tomorrow, but
if you don't hear from my by noon Tuesday, send me email and chastise
me severely.... We'll get everyone taken care of before the move.
Also, don't forget we've created two other new lists, sbb-birdchat for
the more social aspect of this community, and
SBB-BirdPhotography for those of us who chase birds with cameras. Info
on subscrbing to those is on the www.siliconvalleybirders.org site for
those interested.
Now would be a good time for people to start posting to the new list
-- cross posting to both lists for the next week isn't a bad idea, as
we finish up the migration, and it'll give people a chance to make
sure things are delivering reliably and that everything's working well
for them.
And as always, if you have questions, comments or issues, feel free to
drop me a line...
