This is not necessarily plaid-worthy, but at my home off Montebello
Road at 2100 feet elevation, every summer brings an increasing number
of hummingbirds, mostly Anna's but the occasional migrating
Selasphorus, MAYBE a Black-chinned. In peak summer, they consume 1
gallon of sugar water PER DAY between about 7 feeders. Their
territorial or confrontative behavior provides constant entertainment
but their current 'victims' are a pair of Western bluebirds nesting in
a box at my house, and now a male Hooded oriole....first I have ever
seen up here although I have duly noted the annual sightings on
south-bay-birds in Cupertino (2000 feet below me). I thought I saw the
oriole the other day and set out orange slices and jam, but of course
he now prefers the feeders, much to the consternation of the hummers.
